Official opening of the BACP building extension

We were fortunate to be invited to the official opening of the BACP building extension – a celebration of community, growth and shared purpose.

Jet attended and was welcomed to a packed venue filled with representatives from the public, business, community and funding sectors. The event offered a tour of the impressive new facilities, along with a fascinating look back at the organisation’s history.

BACP was formed as an informal group in 1971 in the wake of Bangladesh’s war of independence. In its early days it occupied a terrace house and later an old pub. The first generation of Bangladeshis living in Rochdale created an informal association, firstly, to lend a voice to the liberation struggle of Bangladesh and secondly, to support families and friends in overcoming barriers to navigate living in the UK.

Today, BACP stands as a thriving community hub, offering a wide range of services that bring positive change to local lives, including some truly inspiring provision for young people. The centre welcomes everyone, regardless of background, continuing the spirit of inclusion that has defined it from the start.

We were particularly moved to see BSL interpreters at the event, ensuring that deaf community members could participate fully in the celebration.

For Generations to Come is going to follow-up with a dedicated event for deaf community members to listen, learn, and explore their visions for a thriving Rochdale, so we can understand their unique challenges and ideas for how a thriving Rochdale would look for them.
